Washington County Stockdog Trial -- Results

Washington County Junior Stockdog Trial
FFA & 4H
Saturday November 1, 2008
Bartlesville, OK

Well Folks,
I want to thank everyone that help to put on this triala special thanks to all who pitched in to help with the time keeping and scores and posting, entry table, setout folks, or any other job we asked you to to step in and help with.  A special thanks to Jack King for doing the announcing.   I especially want to thank the many participants that came to a goat trial not knowing what to expect.  I hope this is just the first in many to come.

I consider the trial to have been a big success! We were scheduled to have two-goes, but there were enough participants, that we only had enough day light to have one-go and a jackpot and still raised over $1400.00 for the kids.  We couldn't have done it without you folks bringing your dogs, so THANK YOU!!!

The day was beautiful, I don't think we could of had better weather for a November day. Brother Paul Rummage got the day started off with a day-break devotional. The atmosphere was lite and fun, there was a lot of visiting and I'm sure many new friendships were made. We had a number of breeds represented at the trial, I feel safe in saying the Corgi was the smallest in breed but he didn't have much success on those goats, but he may have been the hit of the day.

We had participants from 4 states come to play and support the kids.

All I can say, from me & Ruth --- Thank You All!!!

Grady County Fair Sheepdog Trial

Grady County Fair Sheepdog Trial
Chickasha, OK
August 23, 2008

We kicked off the 2008 late summer and fall trial season on a positivea note. We took 4 dogs to a nice sheep trial last weekend at the Grady County Fair Sheepdog Trial, hosted by Josh & Jenna Baxter. Jack was the only veteran dog we took, the other were first time sheep trialers --- Roper's Jackson, Head N' Heel Katie, Oaktree Beth. Jack was first place in the Open Ranch Class, and in the Ranch Class, Jackson and Katie tied for third place on points, but Jackson had the faster time line, Beth was a DQ, being the youngest of the four all she could see was a mouthful of wool.

Kathy Knox Clinic

Kathy Knox Clinic
Sponsored by
Mid States Stock Dog Assoc.

The MSSDA held a FREE one day Kathy Knox clinic for their membership in May. All members were welcome to audit the clinic, but only 10 handlers/dogs were drawn from a hat to get to work with Kathy one-on-one, and Ruth was one of the lucky ten.

Kathy is very knowledgeable and does a very good job of communicating to the handlers, so there is no doubt in what she is trying to get across to you.

Ruth looks forward in getting to work with Kathy more in the future, and...
 thank you MSSDA!

2008 Elvin Kopp” Spring Herding Clinic

Elvin Kopp” Spring Herding Clinic
April 11, 12 & 13 2008
Co-Hosted by
Jim & Pam Hicks and Tom & Ruth Hines

Well, our 2008 Elvin Kopp Spring Clinic is over, and it was as big of a success as our 2007 EK Fall Clinic was.

I have been sitting here for the past few days trying to think how I could express in a new way of how much knowledge Elvin brings to the table and what a good job he does in communicating his ideas to young and old. We had participants this time from the "wise" to 12 years old. I have had gotten numerous letters from folks telling me how informative it was, so I have decided to share a couple with you.
THANKS TO EVERYONE THAT HELPED TO MAKE THE CLINIC A SUCCESS AGAIN!!!
Jim & Pam Hicks and Tom & Ruth Hines

  • "Seminar planned well
  • Facilities super
  • Food (5 star)
  • Presenter (Elvin) organized, presented information in a logical sequence, answered questions to the best of his ability, asked questions were at times referred to his presentation (not always answered in the same day) but answered, helped you when you needed help but did not dominate your learning time, thoughtful with explanations, and at times funny but serious.
  • The best part with Elvin is that he did not hinder what you may have already know, but allowed you to think about other options that may help your individual training program.  How do you make yourself get to the next level.    Glenn"
  •
  • "Extremely thought provoking ~ Elvin's clinics are challenging but not overwhelming.  Positive training for both dog and handler ~ I left knowing I can strive to next level.
Excellent food, good laughs, and wonderful working facilities!!  Let's do 'er again!  Sue"

"It was a very well organized clinic in the setup and in the presentation. Elvin allowed you to make a mistake so that he could show you where you were wrong. He showed you how to fix the problem not just a cover up(band aid fix). Also, you learned how to work you're dog with quiet confidence.  I would highly recommend his clinic to young and old handlers alike. A great thanks and good job to Jim and Pam Hicks and Tom and Ruth Hines.

    2007 Elvin Kopp's Fall Clinic--Oklahoma

    Hi Folks,

Our first Elvin Kopp clninc was definitely a success! The weather sure turned out much better than it started. While it was snowing outside we were all inside Jim's warm shop during the Friday night session. Saturday & Sunday were not bad even though it was overcast, in the low 50's with a light wind, so the wind made it feel a little chilly. A special thanks to Pam & Paula Staires, for preparation and feeding us 3 great meals each day of the clinic.

We want to thank you all for your participation in the Kopp Clinic you were a great group. We hope it was informative, and everyone had fun, and made some new friends.

We want to say a special thanks to Elvin! His knowledge, skills, and his abilities to communicate them, are truly special, and I highly recommend attending his clinics anytime you have a chance.

    Thanks Elvin,

    Just a dog

From time to time, people tell me, "lighten up, it's just a dog,"
or, "that's a lot of money for just a dog."

They don't understand the distance traveled, the time spent,
or the costs involved for "just a dog."

Some of my proudest moments have come about with "just a dog."

Many hours have passed and my only company was "just a dog,"
but I did not once feel slighted.

Some of my saddest moments have been brought about by "just a dog,"
and in those days of darkness, the gentle touch of "just a dog" gave me comfort and reason to overcome the day.

If you, too, think it's "just a dog," then you will probably understand
phrases like "just a friend," "just a sunrise," or "just a promise."

"Just a dog" brings into my life the very essence of friendship, trust,
    and pure unbridled joy.

"Just a dog" brings out the compassion and patience that make me a better person.

Because of "just a dog", I will rise early,
take long walks and look longingly to the future.

So for me and folks like me, it's not "just a dog" but an embodiment of all the hopes and dreams of the future,
the fond memories of the past, and the pure joy of the moment.

"Just a dog" brings out what's good in me and diverts my thoughts away
from myself and the worries of the day.

I hope that someday they can understand that it's not "just a dog",
but the thing that gives me humanity and keeps me from being
    "just a man or woman."

So the next time you hear the phrase "just a dog"
    just smile...
    because they "just don't understand."
